Industrial Corrosion Control. Structural Steel Protection.
Steel is the backbone of modern commercial and industrial infrastructure, but it has one fatal flaw: it wants to rust. When raw steel is exposed to oxygen, moisture, chemicals, or road salt, corrosion begins immediately. If left untreated, rust will eat completely through the metal, causing catastrophic structural failure and millions of dollars in damage.
At RSP Painting, we specialize in professional, high-volume Structural and Industrial Steel Painting. We are a 100% self-performing company, meaning we use our own highly trained employees, our own heavy-duty sandblasters, and our own industrial spray rigs—never unverified subcontractors. From high-reach warehouse ceiling trusses to massive outdoor fuel tanks and bridges, we understand the exact chemistry required to stop rust and protect your steel assets for decades.
Stop corrosion before it spreads. Call us today at 800-538-6723 for a free steel painting quote.
Every Type of Steel Structure We Paint
We provide specialized prep and high-performance coatings for all variations of industrial and commercial steel.
-
Structural Steel & Building Frameworks: We paint I-beams, open-web joists, columns, and metal decking in warehouses, commercial buildings, and sports arenas.
-
Storage Tanks, Silos & Vessels: We apply heat-reflecting and chemical-resistant coatings to the exteriors of fuel tanks, chemical silos, water towers, and processing vats.
-
Bridges & Infrastructure: We coat highway overpasses, pedestrian bridges, and crane runways with heavy-duty, DOT-approved corrosion inhibitors.
-
Pipes & Industrial Transport Lines: We paint gas lines, steam pipes, fire suppression sprinkler lines, and chemical processing networks according to strict OSHA color codes.
-
Towers & High-Reach Steel: We paint communication towers, high-mast parking lot light poles, traffic signals, and manufacturing smokestacks using specialized rigging and high-reach boom lifts.
-
Plant Machinery & Factory Equipment: We use heavy-duty industrial enamels and epoxies to protect manufacturing machines, assembly conveyors, and steel stairs/mezzanines.
-
Corrugated Metal Siding & Roofs: We restore faded, rusted metal buildings, warehouses, and metal roof systems with weather-proof, rust-blocking finishes.
Our Advanced Surface Prep & Coating Methods
Slapping regular paint over rust will fail in a matter of weeks. Steel requires exact preparation and multi-layer coating systems to survive industrial environments:
-
Surface Preparation (SSP Standards): Depending on the level of rust, we clean the steel using hand tool cleaning (SP2), power tool grinding (SP3), or high-pressure commercial sandblasting/abrasive blasting (SP6/SP10) to achieve a profile that paint can bond to perfectly.
-
Zinc-Rich Primers: We apply specialized zinc primers that act as a “sacrificial layer.” If the paint is ever scratched, the zinc corrodes instead of the underlying steel, stopping rust from spreading underneath the coat.
-
Industrial Epoxies: We use high-build epoxy mid-coats to create a thick, waterproof, and chemical-resistant barrier that shields the steel from harsh environments.
-
Aliphatic Polyurethanes: For outdoor steel, we finish with an ultra-durable polyurethane topcoat. This layer provides extreme gloss and color retention, stopping the sun’s UV rays from breaking down the protective epoxy layers underneath.
Why Facilities Managers Choose RSP for Steel Work
-
Zero Operations Downtime: Industrial plants cannot afford to shut down production. We work entirely around your operations, executing shifts overnight, on weekends, or during scheduled holiday facility shutdowns.
-
OSHA & NACE Standards: Our crews follow strict safety regulations and understand industrial coating metrics, ensuring every layer of primer and paint is applied to the exact thickness required for the job.
-
Flawless Asset Protection: Before we sandblast or spray, we wrap nearby inventory, machinery, conveyor belts, and vehicle staging areas in heavy plastic shielding to eliminate overspray and dust drift.
-
No Project Too Complex: Whether it requires high-altitude swing-stage scaffolding, heavy scissor lifts, or specialized rope access, we have the gear and certifications to paint steel at any height.
Large FAQ Area (Common Steel Painting Questions)
Why does paint peel off steel so easily if it isn’t prepped right? New steel often has a smooth, oily layer called “mill scale” from the manufacturing plant, and old steel has loose rust and dirt. If you paint directly over mill scale or rust, the paint cannot grab onto the metal and will peel off in sheets. We use grinders, wire wheels, or sandblasters to create a rough microscopic profile that locks the paint to the metal permanently.
What is the difference between epoxy and polyurethane steel coatings? Epoxy is an incredibly tough, thick coating that acts as a waterproof shield against chemicals, salt, and water, but it will chalk and fade if exposed to direct sunlight. Polyurethane is thinner but has extreme UV resistance. For outdoor steel, we use both: epoxy to block moisture and rust, and a polyurethane topcoat to protect the epoxy from the sun.
Can you paint steel that is already heavily rusted? Yes, as long as the steel is still structurally sound. We use power tools or sandblasting to grind away all the loose, flaky rust down to a solid base. We then apply a specialized chemical rust-converter or a direct-to-metal (DTM) rust-inhibiting primer that neutralizes any remaining microscopic rust particles and seals the metal.
What is electrostatic painting, and do you offer it for steel? Yes! Electrostatic painting is a process where the paint gun gives the liquid paint a negative electrical charge, and the steel structure is grounded with a positive charge. The steel acts like a magnet, pulling the paint directly to it. This creates an incredibly even coat and completely eliminates overspray, making it perfect for painting indoor factory machinery or office railings next to clean spaces.
Can you paint steel pipes that operate at very high temperatures? Yes. Regular paint will burn and smoke off a hot pipe instantly. For boilers, steam lines, and exhaust stacks, we utilize specialized silicone-ceramic high-temp paints that can safely handle temperatures reaching from up to over without losing their bond or color.
Are your industrial painters trained in safety? Absolutely. Sandblasting and painting heavy structural steel requires expert safety training. Every single person on the RSP crew is a direct employee trained in OSHA safety regulations, fall arrest systems, respirator usage, and high-reach lift operation.
How long does a professional steel paint job last? When steel is prepped correctly to industrial standards and coated with a proper multi-layer system (Primer + Mid-coat + Topcoat), the finish can easily protect the metal from rust for 10 to 15+ years, even in harsh outdoor or chemical environments.
